How Do Their Gardens Grow?

Garden Tour Returns

Beautiful homes and blooming flowers accentuate the Magnolia Garden Club’s Second Annual Tour of Gardens and Houses.

A few houses and gardens were on the schedule as of this issue’s deadline with one or two more expected for inclusion, says organizer Martha Gibson. The tour includes homes within the central Valdosta area as well as a bonus house and garden a few miles out of town.

Proceeds from the tour will go toward an irrigation system for the gardens outside of the Garden Center, which is the home to The Crescent, Gibson says.

Advanced tickets may be purchased from The Crescent, 2-5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, April 1-17.

“Brochures with pictures of all the houses and gardens and a map and directions for reaching them can be picked up at The Crescent by ticketholders from April 13 through the 18th,” Gibson says. “On the day of the tour, tickets and brochures can be secured by entering the drive at the side of The Crescent and stopping at the tent at the exit.”

Tickets are $15. The tour is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 18.

Martha Gibson provides descriptions of the houses on the tour.

Kay Henry, 115 High St. “Kay Henry’s house is almost 100 years old and is furnished completely with antiques which she has collected. Kay plans her garden so she will have blooming plants year round.”

Dr. and Mrs. David Johnson, 206 Pebblewood Drive. “The Johnson house is the former home of ‘Doc’ Holliday. It has the same floor plan as when he lived there but has been beautifully renovated and furnished.”

Dr. and Mrs. David Retterbush, 3324 Plantation Drive. “The Retterbush garden is very large and those touring will be invited inside the antique conservatory which was brought over from England and overlooks the garden.”

Bonus house: “The Charlie Lyons’ house and garden will require a five-mile drive from town but will be well worth the trip. The owners have incorporated the natural features of the area in their garden and these include a large depression and a small stream. The house, which is also on the tour, is spectacular and all the windows overlook an area of the garden.”
